Safety Tip: Be sure to reprogram remotes.

When you purchase an existing home make sure you reprogram the remotes that were given to you when you close escrow. Most garage door operators have a learn button located by where the antenna wire hangs down from the motor head. You need to press the learn button for a minimun of 6 seconds and that will clear the operators memory of any transmitters that had been programmed into it. You can test this by pressing the remotes to see if the door closes. If it does not close you have successfully cleared the code in the operator’s memory. To reprogram the remotes on a Liftmaster garage door opener you need to press the learn button and release it quickly. Do not hold the button for longer that 1 second. Push the desired button on the remote anfd the light bulbs on the operator will flash letting you know that that the code has been received. Check by pushing the button and the door should operate.
Sometimes the previous homeowner programmed the operator into his Home Link compatible vehicle and did not erase the code by holding the 2 outside buttons for 10 seconds in the car. If the previous owner did not erase the code in the vehicle, he has access to your garage. Be safe and erase the codes yourself.
